|
Warren Schmidt is forced into retirement from an insurance company. He's married to a woman whom he defines as a stranger. She dies of a stroke after 42 years of marriage and while he's organizing her funeral, he finds out that she had been cheating on him with his best friend. His mission is to see his daughter that's getting married to a bizarre water mattress salesman who Schmidt obviously detests. He sets out on his way across America in his caravan to reach his daughter in order to stop the wedding. Schmidt runs into a difficult age. The third age. A period of retirement, of rest and more often than not, of regrets and doubts about his life. The only affectionate contact he has is with a long-distance foster child from Tanzania he writes to. Schmidt tells this boy every thing about his life until he gets home and reads a letter from a nun from Tanzania that thanks him for everything he's done for the little boy. Schmidt breaks down and cries because for the first time in his life, he realises that he's done something good for someone.

He sends his agent (Danny De Vito) to hell, who even fakes having a heart attack to no avail. He's about to break off things with Amanda but she beats him to the chase, saying that she'd already found another guy. That other guy turns out to be the doctor she'd been fondled by half way through the film. In the end Dobel doesn't go to to California because he has to go into hiding for having shot at a cop. So Jerry goes alone.
