| Fonzie jumps the shark |
 The Americans have a term for everything. You know when a TV program has seen the last of its golden days and the writers don't know what to write anymore but the producers want to milk the show for its last drop. When you can tell that a show will never make a comeback of any sorts and you know exactly when, that's the point when the show "Jumps the shark"
Where does it come from? Happy Days. In particular in this clip, with Fonzie decked out with his customary leather jacket and Bermuda shorts, has to jump over an enclosure that houses a great white shark. This was aired and to many the statement was clear: Happy Days had seen its best days. The happy days were over. This doesn't got to say that the show was taken off the air. Happy Days enjoyed over a hundred more episodes after making its "Jumped the shark" statement.
The internet has given rise to a new sort of shark jumping. A site www.jumptheshark.com allows user to vote the precise moment in which show jumps the shark, if it exists. Indeed it is also possible that a show hasn't necessarily jumped the shark yet.
A famous example, which is also mentioned on the site is when Mulder leaves the X-Files. When Michael Knight's twin brother arrives aboard the Golliath, Michael does well by crashing head on.
We have other personal examples. With Baywatch for example, we are torn between thinking whether the woman who is reincarnated as a cat was jumping the shark or whether Baywatch nights, the spin-off in which they go and slay vampires was. More than jumping the shark...that's jumping the Whale shark.
The new ones (Lost, Heroes and Prison Break) are too new to determine whether they have jumped the shark, although we are rather fond of thinking that when Sara Tancredi dies in the first episodes of the third season, the writers were thinking chomp chomp.
